The Show Must Go On
Even in Pajamas!

The January sales are well and truly over and one particular item has been on the shopping list of Girvan Musical Society members this year- A pair of PJ’s!It’s now only a few weeks until the society perform their tenth annual musical “The Pajama Game” and it’s shaping up to be one of the best ever.It has something for everyone; a sweeping love story, a hilarious script and a fast paced musical score packed with hits including ‘Once a Year Day’, ‘Hey There’, ‘Steam Heat’ and ‘Hernando’s Hideaway’.

The show written by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross was first staged in 1954 followed by a film version in 1957 starring Doris Day.  It enjoyed a revival on Broadway as recently as last year.

The story centres around exploits at the Sleep Tite Pajama Corporation.  As the musical opens the workers are campaigning to get a seven and a half cents pay rise.  Sid Sorokin, the newly appointed superintendent makes quite an impression on the workforce with his no nonsense work ethic.  He also attracts the attention of Babe Williams, for a rather different reason, and the perfect love story seems set.  Babe is head of the factory grievance committee however but factory politics won’t get in the way of true love –will they?

The show features a host of characters from the formidable factory owner Mr Hastler to the shop floor time keeper Mr Hines.  He has one eye on his stop watch and the other on secretary and girlfriend Gladys – well she does tend to flirt a bit!

This show is particularly special for the society as it’s their tenth anniversary musical but also because it nearly didn’t happen!

“Just after Christmas one of the cast moved to England and we found ourselves with no one to play the lead role of Sid Sorokin” explained Director Andrew Nicol.

“I really thought we wouldn’t be able to fill the role but with the show in jeopardy I was delighted when Dad agreed to join the company”.

Dad is, of course, professional Tenor James Nicol.  The company are delighted James has joined them and in particular for their 10th Anniversary show.  He is joined on stage by society favourites John Gourlay, Lorna McColm, Olive Lindsay, Margaret Nicol and in a first time principal role Ross McNab. Smaller principal parts have been taken on by many other society members and everyone is gearing up – learning the lines, singing the songs and mastering the tricky dance steps too!

The show runs from Tuesday13th to Saturday 17th March at Girvan Academy Theatre.  Tickets are priced at £8 and will be able from The Paper Shop and The Sweetie Shop from this Saturday onwards.

There is nothing like the atmosphere of a full house.  For this we need your support so get your tickets soon and lets make this Girvan Musical Society’s best show yet!!
